Fishing on Lake Cumberland: Species, Spots, and Seasons

Lake Cumberland is one of Kentucky's great fishing lakes, best known for its striped bass but full of other species too. We host a lake house near Burnside, and anglers are some of our favorite guests. Here is a plain guide to what swims here, where to launch, and when to come.

What you can catch

• Striped bass (stripers): the headliner. Cumberland is famous for its stripers, and big ones. Trolling and live bait are common approaches, and a local guide is the fast track if you are new to it.
• Largemouth and smallmouth bass: both are here, with rocky points and coves that hold smallmouth in particular.
• Crappie: a spring favorite around brush and cover, and great eating.
• Walleye and catfish: both are caught here as well, with catfish available much of the year.

Where to launch

You are close to two marinas from a Burnside-side base. Burnside Marina is about five minutes out with ramps, fuel, and quick access to the southern end of the lake and the Cumberland River. Lee's Ford Marina is about fifteen minutes and opens onto the northern arm. Both are good starting points, and both can point you toward rentals and local guides.

Licenses and rules

Everyone of fishing age needs a Kentucky fishing license, and short-term and annual options are available online through the state before you arrive. Check the current size and creel limits for stripers and other species, since they can change. A guide or the marina can confirm the current rules.

Best seasons to fish

Spring is prime for crappie and active bass as the water warms. Summer stripers often go deep, so early mornings and evenings, and a guide who knows the thermocline, pay off. Fall brings cooler water and strong striper action again, plus fewer boats on the lake. Winter fishing is quiet and productive for those who dress for it.

End the day at the house

Part of a good fishing trip is the base you come back to: a kitchen to cook the catch, space for the crew, and a spot to relax after a long day on the water. A lake house with room to spread out beats a motel for a fishing weekend with friends.
